The President Message

It gives me immense pleasure to reach out to you through the redesigned website of SPWLA-India Chapter. I am hopeful that this website will form the fulcrum of internal and external communication of the activities and programmes of SPWLA India Chapter.

In the year 2005, the erstwhile Joseph Koithara well Logging Society (JKWLS) which was founded in 1987 at Dehradun, by Shri.T.S.Gill and Mr.A.C.Paul of ONGC in memory of Late Shri Joseph Koithara an eminent petrophysicist of ONGC was rechristened as the Indian Chapter of SPWLA USA, located at Mumbai. This was necessitated due to the emergence of other Major players in E&P industry in India following the opening up of the Indian economy. It was also felt necessary to shift the base from Dehradun to Mumbai to promote the activities of this society with a Pan Industry outlook.

In line with the objective of the parent body, SPWLA- India Chapter has major task of disseminating knowledge and promoting new technology and techniques for the advancement of science of formation evaluation in India. Towards this objective, our chapter has been actively organizing technical sessions and lectures by eminent personalities to share the expertise and disseminate knowledge across the industry. The membership of the society is open to all geoscientists, students, company personnel and others interested in the science of formation evaluation.

Our Chapter has successfully organised two Regional Symposiums at Mumbai, in March 2007 and November 2009 which have received very enthusiastic response from both Indian and Foreign delegates, Domain experts, service providers and academia. The First symposium was held at Mumbai on 19-20th March 2010 on the theme “Value addition through lateral valuation”. The theme of the 2nd Symposium held on 18-19th Nov 2009 was “ Innovations in Petrophysical evaluation of unconventional reservoirs”. Both the symposiums were of contemporary interest to the Indian E&P scenario and had significant take away’s and valuable lessons learnt for the participants by way of shared experience and expertise. In recognition of the outstanding success of the 1st symposium and the activities of the chapter, our chapter was awarded the “ Outstanding chapter for 2007” at the Annual SPWLA symposium held at Edinburgh.

During the 2nd Regional symposium the First SPWLA-India Life time Achievement Award was conferred upon Late Shri Joseph Koithara who is rightly regarded as the father of Petrophysics in India. It has been proposed to Institute this biennial life time achievement award coinciding with the Regional Symposiums which will be held every two years.

I am pleased to inform you that the executive committee which met at 11 High, ONGC on 19.10.2010 has decided to have the 3rd Regional symposium at Mumbai on 18-19th Nov 2011. The theme for the symposium is being finalized in consultation with the members. I call upon all members to come out with creative suggestions for the theme and successful conduct of the symposium.

I call upon the Executive committee members in particular and all the members in general to constructively engage themselves in promoting the objectives of the Chapter, increase the membership and reach out to new frontiers, especially the student community so that we can forge Industry-Academia linkages to come out with creative solutions to address the challenges of Petrophysics and Formation Evaluation.

I wish you all the best in your creative pursuits to address the challenges of Formation Evaluation.
