The Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) India Chapter is engaged in the activities for ‘advancement of the science of formation evaluation’ of wells drilled for oil exploration and exploitation. The Society based at Mumbai is a chapter of SPWLA, Houston, Texas, USA and it is a non-profit organization. The chapter is a registered body under the Government of Maharashtra, India. Technical personnel from different E & P oil companies and service companies engaged in India are the members of the Society.
In 2008, the Chapter comprised 40 SPWLA (USA) members, 160 affiliated members, and 60 student members. Over the years, the Chapter has expanded its reach and strengthened its community. As of 2025, the SPWLA India Chapter proudly counts 470 Lifetime Members and 51 Active Annual Members.
The Executive Committee (EC) is an elected body that operates purely on a voluntary basis, without any pay or perks, driven by the passion to promote technical excellence and knowledge sharing within the geoscience community.
Membership is open to any individual interested in well logging, formation evaluation, and reservoir characterization, and all members are encouraged to also join the parent SPWLA, USA to engage with the global community of petrophysicists and well log analysts.
History
Initially the Society was established in the year 1987 at Dehradun in the name of Joseph Koithara Well Logging Society (JKWLS) in fond memory of Late Shri Joseph Koithara, an eminent Petrophysicist of the country. It has been revived from dormant stage in 2005 and shifted its activities to Mumabi, a hub of hydrocarbon exploration in India. Subsequently it has been renamed as SPWLA-India chapter in 2007.

In line with the objective of SPWLA, the chapter promotes the advancement of the science of Petrophysics and Formation Evaluation for Exploration and Production of hydrocarbons, with special emphasis on the Indian subcontinent. To achieve the objective the chapter organizes following activities.
